Mask ID, Is It Worth The Less Security You Get?

Apple recently released IOS 15.4 Beta, which not just brought new emojis, but also a long-waited feature: Mask ID. Basically, when your iPhone or IPad detects that you are using a mask, it scans only your eyes and the area around it to authenticate (or not). You can also register different pairs of glasses so authentication is faster and more accurate.

The thing with this feature is that you can’t choose whether it works only to unlock the iPhone or if it works with payments both in-app or website, or with Apple Pay in physical stores too. So if you’re the type of person who likes to have your data as secure as possible, this might not be the feature for you.

Juli Cover, a specialist from MacRumors said: “In testing, we have not been able to get an ‌iPhone‌ to unlock by someone else wearing a mask, but that doesn't mean that it can't happen, especially in families where there may be similarities between the area around the eyes.”.

Together with MaskID, IOS 15.4 introduces new emojis, including melting face, biting lip, bubbles and more.

I’ve been using IOS 15.4 with Mask ID on for some time now and although I don’t feel as safe as before, I think that the practicality MaskID brings to iPhone makes up for it, and helps us be safer health-wise. The biggest problem with this feature in my opinion is that it is only available for the iPhone 12 and above leaving all other devices that use FaceID for authentication lacking this feature.

Talking about the new emoji, I think they are so funny, I use the saluting face that looks like people in the military when they see each other all the time. And I don’t know about you, but I feel like the beans emoji has been here forever now, but it is new!!

Knowing that, what do YOU think? Is it worth the upgrade? Will you use MaskID?
