Throughout the years, you’ve probably heard that the human body is fascinating. I’d argue that “fascinating” doesn’t do it justice. What’s most curious is that we don’t usually realize what’s going on beneath the surface, including the tiny systems, the strength, and the bizarre details that make us who we are. So, let’s take a moment to dive into five facts about the human body that’ll straight up blow your mind.
Your ears (and nose) never stop growing.
Your ears get bigger as you get older. They’re not actually growing though. Since they’re mostly made of cartilage, which contains collagen that breaks down over time, they start to sag over time. The same process can happen in your nose. Since it also has cartilage, it can also look larger.
Your brain generates enough electricity to power a light bulb.
Did you know that your brain contains about 100 billion neurons? Every time you move, laugh, think, and see, these neurons are sending small electrical and chemical signals. According to National Geographic, all of these neurons together can generate enough electricity to power a low-wattage bulb.
Human bones are stronger than steel.
If we compare by weight, human bones are approximately five times stronger than steel. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that it’s not that bone is harder than steel. It’s stronger for how light it is in proportion.
You can shed up to 35 kg of skin in your lifetime.
Sounds gross, but you are constantly creating new skin cells while old ones flake off. Every minute, you lose around 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells. By the end of your life, that adds up to roughly 35 kg of skin.
Stomach acid dissolves metal.
The hydrochloric acid in your stomach is incredibly strong. Its job is to help break down food and kill harmful bacteria. Shockingly, it can even dissolve certain metals. You might wonder, why doesn’t it destroy our own stomach? That’s because a layer of mucus made of proteins protects the stomach lining and neutralizes some of the acid. Without this protection, your stomach would be capable of digesting itself.
Impressed yet? These are just a few of the extraordinary things our bodies are capable of. Next time that someone tells you that the human body is fascinating, I urge you to correct them. The human body isn’t just fascinating. It’s unbelievable.
