In the world, many different cultures celebrate the festive season in unison. Different cultures, however, have their own ways of celebrating this holiday. Here are some countries that have unique customs during the holiday season.
In Japan, there is a unique yet fun tradition around the end of the year, and that is to eat fried chicken. This began when the American fast-food giant KFC launched a major campaign to enter the Japanese market during the holiday season. It was so successful that it led many Japanese people to associate the fast food chain with the holidays, making it a cultural tradition to eat fried chicken every Christmas.
On the other side of the world, in Peru, there is another unusual tradition; ”Takankuy”, an event where communities organize fistfights to settle disputes from the year. Any fight, discussion, or unsolved disagreement can be brought back as a fist fight, with the purpose of ending the conflict once and for all on Christmas day.
Lastly, a weird but wholesome tradition takes place in Germany. On Christmas morning, it is common for people to hide pickles in the Christmas Tree. According to this tradition, whoever finds it later in the day will receive an extra gift or good fortune. This comes from the story of a Bavarian man, who had been taken captive in the American Civil War and famished until a pitiful guard gave him a pickle, which acts as a symbol of strength and will to live on.
It is important to understand that different cultures celebrate this holiday in their own unique ways, and showing respect and openness during Christmas is crucial for a healthy and happy community. So enjoy your holidays and consider partaking in some unique Christmas traditions!
