Taylor Swift is a well-known international popstar with an outstanding and lasting career that conquered many fans around the globe. She is best known for her lyricism, and according to her fans, she is a lyrical genius, often praised for music's storytelling and emotional depth. As one of the best-selling musicians of all time, Taylor Swift inevitably faces criticism, something she has experienced since her debut album in 2006. . Taylor Swift has been in the industry for 19 years, making a downfall in her career almost unavoidable after years of success and awards.
On October 3, 2025, Taylor Swift released her highly anticipated twelfth album, “The Life of a Show Girl.” Although the album achieved huge commercial success, breaking several chart records, critics pointed out several flaws, reviewing the music as boring and less innovative than her previous works. The album differed from her previous albums, as it explored a more upbeat pop style rather than her recent indie-folk sound and former introspective works.
One of the album's songs, “CANCELLED!”, caught the public's attention for its dull and “cringe” lyricism. The song presents the perspective of a famous young woman facing the harsh criticism of fame and performance, but also embraces the controversy, and she sings in the chorus: "Good thing I like my friend's cancelled." The verse in particular was a target of criticism as it was shallow and used cringy slang, which disappointed many Swiftities who were used to Taylor’s emotional and deep lyricism.. Additionally, Taylor's songs contained lyrics that the audience related to; however, this song, centered on fame and backflash, is shallow and unrelatable to ordinary fans. All these factors contributed to a large backflash against the album, which resulted in people reducing the album to a repetitive and emotionless work, and some even claiming that it was the start of Taylor Swift's downfall.
Although the disappointment from both the public and the critics is fair, since some of the songs within the album differ from Taylor's usual genre and are somewhat dull and cringy, the album still should not be reduced to poor lyricism. For instance, the song “ The Fate of Ophelia” was acclaimed by the listeners, and is currently trending on multiple platforms with Swifties praising Taylor as a lyrical genius. The song narrates a woman being saved from a tragic fate after meeting love, mirroring Ophelia's story in Shakespeare's Hamlet. Unlike “CANCELLED", this song has a catchy pop sound and poetic lyrics that demonstrate her love to her fiancé, Travis Kelce (American football star), while paralleling a Shakespearean character. Furthermore, it aligns more with Taylor's genre that has been praised for years from both her fans and the critics. “The Fate of Ophelia” is my favorite song from Taylor Swift; it's catchy and poetic, becoming a viral sensation and saving the album's reputation and critical reception.
In conclusion, Taylor Swift’s twelfth album does not mark the downfall of her career; it marks the start of a new era in the singer's music career. "The Life of a Show Girl” showcases a drastic change of genre that differs from what the public was expecting from the artist. Taylor, however, has matured and grown throughout the years, and it is natural that her style evolves and she feels the need to experiment with her music. The album is not perfect and is far away from being her best; it has several flaws, and personally, I didn't enjoy the majority of the songs. Nonetheless, the album contains good songs that showcase Taylor's lyrical genius while exploring a new musical style.
