João Who?

Alice Andrade

The Beginning

João Fonseca; just a four year old that was introduced to the sport of tennis at a very young age, living in Rio de Janeiro, playing in a Country Club right next to his house. Before becoming the professional player he is today, Fonseca was just a normal boy who was born August 21, in 2006, making him only eighteen years old in 2025. The son of Roberta and the CEO and co-founder of the IP Capital Partners, Cristiano Fonseca. The little boy, at a very young age had already fallen in love with tennis and the players, his favorite player was Roger Federer. Once, Fonseca met Federer and requested to take a picture with him, years later, the two players re-created the picture, but this time with two adults and not a professional and a little kid.

Turning Point

After all the hard work, Fonseca was able to get a spot at the 2023 Australian Open to play the boys’ doubles tournament with Alexander Blockx. A win of both victory and recognition was conquered at the time, since Fonseca became the 2023 world champion and was the first Brazilian to finish the season as the number 1 in the Junior rankings. Later on, the boy only kept winning singles and doubles in Rio and qualifying for bigger tournaments. He also became the first South-American to claim a 6-0 score against a top 50 player in only the age of 18. In the beginning of 2024, the ranking of the young player was 750º in the ATP ranking, but finished the season at the position of 145º, moving 605 positions in the world ranking. What really made Fonseca get views in social media, was the 2025 Australian Open, in which he defeated a much more experienced player than him, Andrey Rublev (the 5th best player in the world). Therefore, because of the exciting win João Fonseca was able to be in the top 100 best players in the world, in the 99th position.

The Next Steps

João Fonseca is set to make history, since he also became the first Brazilian to compete at the Next Gen ATP Finals. Of course the next plans of the rising professional are going to be climbing up the ATP rankings, by sharpening his skills and beating again more advanced players than him, competing in other big tournaments, like the US or French Open, to there create more contacts and relationships with other players and experiences important for his career, and also by finding contacts, Fonseca may find a famous/experienced coach to train him, so that he can also get better at the sport. It is expected to see the name João Fonseca rising in the tennis world from now on, since the new generation of players are going to take over, making him a big star.
