On September 4th, Brazilians woke up with the news that Deolane Bezera, a lawyer and widow of the funk singer MC Kevin, was arrested for fraud, inappropriate usage of money, and participation in in-person gambling activities, which are illegal in Brazil. Along with her, her mother Solange Bezerra was arrested for being an accomplice to her daughter’s crimes.
When the investigation was published, Deolane and her mother were in their hometown, Recife, Pernambuco, and were arrested at their family house. After spending five days in jail, Deolane was able to be partially free and serve house arrest because of her six-year-old daughter. In Brazil, every pregnant woman, people above the age of eighty, and women who have kids under six years old have the right to follow house arrest. Unfortunately for some, and fortunately for others, when she manifested in her social media and in interviews right after getting out of the jail door, she received another arrest warrant. The process continued in court for almost twenty days, but in the end the widow was allowed to leave the jail with her mother, who initially didn’t leave the penitentiary. Now, mother and daughter are celebrating their freedom away from the jail guards, living life normally, with no usage of an ankle monitor.
At some point, allowing Deolane's freedom was beneficial for her daughter, who was suffering a lot being away from her mother and grandmother. However, allowing corrupt women to be free is not fair and safe for our society. It does not serve justice; it's unfair to the taxpayers, to the people they robbed, and mainly, it is not fair for the ones who played the gambling games based on her promotions.
In the end, allowing their freedom helped a kid and helped a family — their family. The problem is that it negatively affects other significant parts of society! What about those who are waiting for their money back, work hard, and live honest lives?
