When the internet first became popular three decades ago, children, teenagers and adults were amazed by all the things it could do. This was a crucial period for technological development, as the internet was still in its early stages and was being discovered by people all over the world. It also began changing people's lives and how children and young people grew up and learned. Since then, the internet has evolved and become accessible to nearly five billion people all over the world. For many children, it is no longer a luxury but a necessity, used for playing games, talking to family and friends and learning new things. The internet also began to reshape childhood, influencing how kids talk, think, play and interact with each other. As technology continues to evolve, however, it is important to consider its challenges and costs alongside its benefits.

Challenges

Growing up in a digital world can expose children and teenagers to many serious challenges older generations might not yet understand. According to a study published by the National Library of Medicine, data shows that spending more than three hours per day on social media has been associated with greater risks of anxiety and depression among teenagers. This shows that social media can be connected to teenagers' mental health and well being. It can also lead them into a cycle of addiction and longing for online validation through likes, comments, and followers. When they start comparing themselves to others or depending too much on what they see online, their confidence and self-esteem can be greatly impacted.

Younger children who are too openly exposed to the internet without supervision might also become too addicted to digital entertainment. They might be exposed to inappropriate content or become targets of people who want to take advantage of them. These risks show why it is important for children to understand how to use the internet safely and why responsibles should help manage their screen time.

Cyberbullying has also grown and become a major concern with the expansion of online platforms. Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying can follow children home and continue at any time of the day. Hurtful comments, messages and posts can quickly spread, making the victims feel insecure and targeted. This can affect their confidence, mental health and relationships. Although the internet allows teens to communicate and connect easily, it can also create harmful situations that make them feel unsafe and less comfortable around others. This demonstrates how digital technology can negatively impact children and adolescence when it is used inappropriately to hurt and manipulate others.

Benefits

Being young and having a powerful tool to use in advantage, such as the internet, is a privilege that can be used to accomplish a lot. You can learn about almost anything within a few taps on your smartphone. The internet offers many benefits for children and teenagers, such as educational resources that help students develop new skills and creativity. They can watch educational videos, research school subjects, learn languages, and explore topics that interest them outside of school. This gives young people more freedom to discover new things and learn at their own pace.

The internet also allows children to stay connected with friends and family and explore their interests and discover new ones. For example, children can communicate with relatives who live far away or find online communities with people who share their interests or hobbies. They can learn about different cultures, countries and points of view that they might not experience otherwise, which can help them become more informed and open minded. When used appropriately, the internet can be much more than a source of mindless entertainment, it can be a tool for learning, creativity and growth.

In conclusion, digital technology has become an intrinsic part of modern childhood, shaping how children learn, think, talk and interact with others. Even though it provides great benefits, there are still concerns about mental health, cyberbullying, screen time and social relationships. The internet can be an incredible tool for learning and communication, but the way children use it makes a difference. Spending too much time online or being exposed to harmful content can interfere with their development, while using technology in a healthy way can help them gain knowledge and stay connected.

Therefore, finding a balance between online and offline is essential to ensure that technology is properly supporting children's development rather than disrupting it. Parents, teachers and young people have a role in creating healthier digital habits. Finally, the goal should not be to remove technology from childhood, but to understand its effects and learn how to use it the right way.
