Richarlison’s journey from hero to struggle shows that success on the field doesn’t guarantee happiness

When people think about football stars, they usually imagine fame, goals, and success. However, not everything is as perfect as it looks. Brazilian striker Richarlison, known by many fans as “Pombo,” had a major spotlight moment during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, scoring a particularly amazing goal. However, he has recently shared that he went through a very difficult period of depression that many people didn’t see.

During the World Cup, Richarlison performed very well. He scored three goals, including an incredible bicycle kick against Serbia that became one of the tournament’s most memorable moments. Even with his strong performance, Brazil was eliminated by Croatia in the quarter-finals, which was a huge disappointment for the team and fans.

After the tournament, things started to fall apart for him. He dealt with many problems at the same time, including issues with his family, a conflict with his agent, injuries, and poor performance at his club, Tottenham Hotspur. In an interview reported by CNN Brasil, Richarlison said: “After the 2022 World Cup, I fell into a depression,” showing how serious the situation became. All of this pressure affected him deeply and lasted for about a year and a half.

At his lowest point, Richarlison made a shocking confession. In an interview highlighted by The Mirror, he said: “One day, while driving, I thought about crashing into a wall.” This shows how serious his mental health struggles were, even though from the outside, his life seemed successful.

Fortunately, things started to change when he decided to seek help. He began working with a psychologist, which he later described as one of the best decisions of his life. He also explained that opening up and talking about mental health struggles can “save lives,” meaning that sharing feelings and seeking support can prevent people from suffering in silence or reaching dangerous emotional states. Along with professional help and support from people close to him, especially his wife, he slowly started to recover and rebuild his mindset. Today, he is married, and his wife has played a key role in his recovery, supporting him during his hardest moments. The couple also has a son, showing a new and positive phase in his life.

This situation highlights that even the most successful athletes can face serious mental health struggles, proving that success does not guarantee emotional well-being and reinforcing how important it is to look for help and speak openly about mental health.

Looking ahead to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Richarlison’s situation is uncertain. Unlike in 2022, he is not guaranteed a spot on the team and has faced inconsistent performances recently. This creates a new challenge for him, as he tries to prove himself again while staying mentally strong.

In the end, Richarlison’s story is not just about football. It is about resilience, mental health, and the reality behind life in the spotlight. It reminds us that everyone, no matter how successful they seem, can go through difficult times and that getting help can truly make a difference.
